The ExtremeContact DWS, which stands for dry, wet, and snow, is Continental's number one ultra high performance all season tire. It was developed for drivers of high end sports cars, coupes, performance sedans and sport trucks. The DWS was designed to allow these drivers to safely drive their high performance cars in any weather condition, even in light snow. The ExtremeContact DWS contains an advanced silica infused all season compound, which they then mold into a asymmetrical tread design. This tread designs outside shoulder blocks help to maintain stability, while the outside ribs promote quick response times. The middle portion of the tread is where the all season capabilities come into play. The crisscross grooves in the tread provide biting edges when help with snow-to-snow traction and also promotes wet weather grip. The long circumferential grooves help to disperse water, and prevent hydroplaning, while also enhancing traction in bad weather. The ExtremeContact DWS has notched letters molded into the tread of the tire, to alert drivers of the tire's wear levels. When the “DWS” is visible in the tread, this indicates that the tire has the necessary tread depth for dry roads, as well as being able to handle wet roads, and light snow. When only the “DW” is showing, this indicates that the tire is perfectly fine to drive on both dry and wet surfaces. When both the “W” and the 'S” have worn away and only the “D” is showing, the tire has the sufficient tread depth for dry roads only. The tire's structure includes twin steel belts, reinforced with a nylon cap that helps to maintain strength while under high speed conditions. The reinforced twin steel belts also help to reduce weight, and promote better wear across the tire.
